We recently installed a beautiful traditional timber sash window at this charming property close by to Nottingham City Centre. Traditional timber sash windows are simply stunning and something the team at FA North have specialised in for decades.
It’s not entirely clear exactly when this type of window was invented but it is thought to date back to the seventeenth century in either Holland or France. It was during the Victorian period, however, that the timber sash window became increasingly common and they can still be seen widely today throughout the UK. This was particularly down to the fact that during this era there were significant advances in glass manufacturing which meant that the Georgian grid style was replaced with larger panes of glass.
When we visited the property, we found that the original sash window, which was located in the back bedroom on the first floor, was rotten. Homeowner Conor was finding that it had to be wedged open to stop it from falling shut. This made ventilation difficult in the warmer weather but, as the original timber window was incredibly damp and rotten, there was an increased risk of mould in the bedroom. The window was beyond repair and needed replacing.
It was important to Conor that he used a supplier who produced quality products and had a proven track record. FA North came highly recommended by a family member who had used us in the past for replacement windows and doors. Their positive experience gave him peace of mind and he knew that he’d be getting a well-made, premium product.
Our team visited the property to measure up and spec the job. Overall, Conor tells us that this was a great experience. We were able to advise on the best style of window and also give feedback on the other windows in the property as well as recommending what could be done to help maintain them.
For Conor, it was very important to choose a timber window that would insulate the house better and reduce the risk of mould. He also didn't want to compromise on quality and was eager to maintain the original features and charm of the Nineteenth Century property.
Our team manufactured and installed a beautiful timber sash window complete with a traditional lead weighted pulley. The lead weight matches that of the sash achieving the perfect counterbalance. This results in effortless movement when opening and closing the sash.
While the spring balance system has become increasingly popular over the years, we prefer the lead weighted system not only for its historic feel but because it will last significantly longer, often only requiring a replacement cord many years down the line.
The finished product looks absolutely stunning and Conor is very happy, saying that all lead times were realistic and any deadlines given were met. Overall he was very happy with the experience and tells us:
Now Conor has a beautifully installed timber sash window with improved insulation just in time for the damp winter weather. If you’re looking for timber window inspiration, take a look at our product page. Or, to talk about a project call us on 0115 987 2339.
